Soup & Service Night

Thursday, November 15th @ 6:00 p.m.

We will have a meal of yummy soups and buns - sign up will be going around for this on sunday for those willing to contribute that night

Then we will be doing a sewing project, drawstring bags and simple toiletry kits to be donated to Woods Homes for the youth that are helped out there.

We will need a couple more sewing machines and lots of scissors, if you can bring one there will be a sign up going around at church.

We will run this project like an assembly line so if you can't sew no worries there will be ironing, cutting, threading the drawstring, or putting the toiletry kits together. The more help the better!

Here is the success of our evening:

25 drawstring backpacks with a kit inside including toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, shampoo, comb, lip gloss.

All donated to Woods Homes!

Thanks for all the help!

Woods Home (downtown Lethbridge - behind courthouse)
woodshomes.ca
Here are a few shots of Woods Homes. The main floor is where counseling takes place, including crisis counseling, family counseling and parenting skills education. The basement houses the shelter which provides youth under the age of 18 with a bed, laundry facilities, showers, and clothing. Youth receive a hot meal at supper, breakfast and a bag lunch. During their stay at the Shelter, staff will work with the youth to find a job, house-hunting, whatever their different situation may require, to make sure they are working towards some goal.

And here are the recipes for the delicious soups we had:

We will also be trying some freezer-to-crock-pot recipes to make dinner time even easier. And of course we will have crock pot dessert too!
-------------------------------------

This evening was a success. All the meals were delicious and the desserts were tasty. I will post the recipes as I receive them, so keep checking back. We also put together a freezer meal to take home. It is for the crock pot. Here is the recipe for it if you missed out on our evening but would still like to put together an easy freezer meal for yourself.

Teriyaki Chicken Freezer Meal
(1) Small bag of Baby Carrots
1/2 a Red Onion cut into Large Chunks
(1) 20oz can pineapple tidbits or chunks (undrained)
(2) Garlic Cloves
(2) Chicken Breasts
1/2 - 2/3 cup teriyaki sauce
Dump everything into a large freezer bag, shake it up, seal, label and put in the freezer.

To cook, take bag out of freezer and let thaw just enough so you can rip the bag off, then dump frozen contents of bag into slow cooker. Cook on HIGH for 4 hours or LOW for 8 hours. If you want a thicker sauce you can add a teaspoon of thickener like flour or corn starch - mix it with a bit of water and pour in near the end of the cooking time to thicken. Serve over Rice. Serves 3-4

Family Home Evening

May 17 - Thursday @ 7:00 p.m.
This evening will be all about Family Home Evening: where to find FHE recources, lesson ideas, and of course we will have FHE type refreshments too!

We will be making FHE Idea Jars to help make monday night lessons quick and easy, with ideas for all ages, even adults. If you already have an FHE system that works for you, then you can make a "service jar" or a "kindness jar" for your family to use. We will be using scrapbook paper to make labels for the jars. We will have a variety of paper to choose from, but if you have a specific color scheme you want feel free to bring your own paper and scrapbook supplies to decorate how you want. Bring your own scissors and/or a paper cutter if you can! We will be supplying tins/jars. See you there.

We will be making something similar to this, we will be using empty formula tins with the plastic lid or #10 cans)

Here are some websites where you can find great resources for Family Home Evening:
http://www.lds.org/family/home-evening
youth.lds.org
www.mormon.org
the mormon channel on YouTube
and don't forget about the new canadian: lds.org that is coming soon

And here are the FHE idea strips to put in the tin. One is more for small children and the other is for older kids and adults. Lots of these ideas were taken from a website (that I will post later - I can't seem to find the website again) and the rest are thanks to some of the ladies on our activity committee!  - okay, so if you want these please email me at jocelynhm@shaw.ca and I will email them to you because I can't figure out how to attach a PDF, sorry.

If you want a tin let me know, I have quite a few extra's!!!

Celebrating Relief Society

On March 17, 1842, 20 women gathered and heard the Prophet Joseph Smith announce the official establishment of the Relief Society organization. Nearly 170 years later, more than 6 million sisters around the world still strengthen each other and build the kingdom of God.

This year marks 170 years since Relief Society was established in this dispensation. The sisters were given authority to preside over the unique work that would help build the kingdom of God and would make a significant contribution to the Lord's work of salvation. The purposes of Relief Society have remained constant through all time. Those purposes — to increase faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families and homes, and seek out and help those who are in need — still guide the organization today.

Join us at the church on Wednesday evening for a delicious meal and an inspiring program as we commemorate Relief Society’s 170th anniversary.

Please invite friends or non-member’s to join us.

Laurels are welcome as well!
