The new year always brings changes. Starting January 3, 2010, Heritage Ward Sacrament Meeting will start at 1:00 p.m.
This past Sunday, we recieved our new manual to be used during Relief Society on the second and third Sunday of each month, the newly revised Gospel Principles Manual. If you have not received yours, they will be handed out again Sunday. The new lesson schedule is on this blog with links to the on-line text version of each lesson. Click here for links to text and audio of each lesson.
This years course of study is the Old Testament. To get started you may want to read a great article found in the January 2002 issue of the Ensign titled Enjoying the Old Testament. (Click here to go to this article!)
May we all look forward to another great year serving and learning as sisters in the Heritage Ward Relief Society!

Annual Nativity Show
Live Nativity Pageant
Dec. 22-24
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints
Corner of Forestry Ave. & 43 St. S.
Performances Every 15 Minutes
Starting at 6pm
Last Performance At 7:45
Dec. 24 Starting At 5:30
Last Performance 7:15
The bleachers are up, grassed areas prepared for overflow, big-box speaker systems in place and spot and flood lights at the ready — the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is ready for the Tuesday kick-off of its 25th live Christmas nativity production at its Forestry Avenue church.
The Coaldale Ward is running the show this year for the church’s Lethbridge East Stake which launched the annual performance “as our gift to the community and surrounding area,” said program director Chris Ingram of Coaldale.
She started last year training with the 2008 director and team, and this year, she and her key team members Maureen Burke and Marilyn Richards are directing all the action.
Outside Saturday, Gerrit Vandewal was priming the sound system while Delon Crapo was making early arrangements for the spot and flood lights and Jack Stockton was helping rope off the stage area that stretches across the entire front of the church entry. Some actors will perform from the church roof. Most of the action will focus on the manger scene while the sheep and donkey will be stabled in a clearing near some bushes at one corner of the building.
The performances, about 20 minutes apart depending on the size of the crowd, will run 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. A different cast of about 30 actors will gather each afternoon about 4:30 for make-up and costume fitting under the direction of Liz Wilson. All faces will be darkened to help the actors show up better under the artificial lighting.
All narration is through a CD. The actors simply play out the words at the direction of Ingram.
A full complement of costumes, some of them original gowns and other clothing which have been added as needed, have been unpacked from the dry cleaners. Supporting canes and crooks are waiting to be used.
Ingram said the array of volunteers from the church is amazing. For instance, several will prepare a hot meal, mostly soup and buns, and others will serve it to the actors before the performances begin. And all the equipment outside has to be set up and taken down each day.
There is room for about 400 on the bleachers, and at least that many more on the grassed area.
Ingram said there has never been busloads of people, from say a seniors centre or for handicapped people, but that would be welcome. She said any bus service can be accommodated by calling Ingram at 403-345-5331 by Monday.
“We can accommodate everybody,” said Ingram. “If they come, they will feel the spirit.”
Each performance will have the cast working up to six performances a night.
Ingram said the seven wards in the Lethbridge East Stake take turns in rotation. But the director team will remain in place for four years. In its final year, it will train the next four-year director team.

Freezer Meals Message
I am loving the freezer meal group!! The ladies are excellent cooks. In my family, I have a 5 year old that is super fussy, and the group is helping me with that. When I tell him that supper was made by someone else, he is intrigued, and more interested in trying the food. So don't let fussy eaters in your family stand in the way of simplifying your life. Here is what we swapped in November and December.
November freezer meal swap.
Corn chowder.
Shredded BBQ Beef.
Hawaiian pizza.
Kale soup.
American Chow Mein.
December freezer meal swap.
Honey Mustard Chicken.
Minestrone.
Tuna casserole.
Easy Chicken and Rice casserole.

Lethbridge Soup Kitchen
There was a great turnout of sisters for our service project at the Lethbridge Soup Kitchen. Upon arrival, we donned aprons, washed hands and got to work gathering, peeling, slicing, stirring, spreading, serving and washing.
The meal:
Vegetable and Sausage Soup
Tossed salad
Buttered breadJuice, coffee, tea
Pie or cake for dessert
People served: 103
First order of business was to gather vegetables for soup from a large room cooler. The task of peeling, slicing, cubing, and dicing vegetables came next. The cut-up vegetables, broth and cooked sausage were all thrown into 4 large pots with lots of water, beef stock and spices! Two large steel bowls of salad were also mixed. Clean-up lasted until about 1:30.
A big thank you to all the sisters that came out and supported this service project. We could not have done it without you!

Reaching Out
Latter-day Saints believe that giving service to others is a lifestyle based on the teachings of Jesus Christ, who “went about doing good.” The desire to serve others crosses cultural boundaries and has been manifested in recent months with stories featured on International Church Web sites. From Brazil and El Salvador to Samoa and Guatemala, members of the Church are reaching out around the world to help those in need. Below are some examples.
The Mormon Helping Hands program, commemorating its first decade in Brazil, has served the needs of thousands while providing many more thousands the opportunity to serve. On 12 October, National Volunteer Day in Brazil, tens of thousands of Mormon Helping Hands volunteers completed service projects throughout the South American country. “When I think of how many of these people have left home on this holiday just to be of service to others,” said Senator Alvaro Dias, “I am certain that this group has something special.” A similar continent-wide project took place in Africa earlier this year.
In El Salvador, hundreds gathered at 17 donor stations as part of a national day to replenish the country’s blood supply. More than 900 units were collected. “The need to supply blood banks is compelling, as there is a deficit of more than 30,000 units of blood each year,” said Ana Vilma Aguilar, national coordinator. “Aid from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is invaluable and it enables us to significantly reduce the gap in our inventory.”
In Samoa volunteers helped restore both a grandmother’s home and her hope at a time of significant human loss following the recent deadly tsunami in the South Pacific.
By Uniting against Hunger, Mormons in Guatemala have responded to drought conditions that have destroyed crops. "I brought two pounds of rice for my little friends who are without food," said an eight-year-old girl who worked side by side with her father for two hours preparing rations. The Church joined hands with numerous charitable and municipal organizations in collecting more than 300 tons of food.
Following September’s tropical storm, members in the Philippines continue an ongoing effort to provide food, water, clothes and other relief supplies. In the Dominican Republic, members say they were following the admonition of their Savior when they donated 500 much-needed wheelchairs.
And on a smaller scale, women in England donated a portable machine that helps hospice patients breathe easier by clearing airways.

November
Welcome to November Sisters!
Because the November issue of the Ensign contains a report of general conference, the magazines do not contain a specific Visiting Teaching Message. You are encouraged to prayerfully select a conference address to share with those you teach. You may refer back to the text/audio/video archives of General Conference by clicking here, or click here to visit the November issue of the Ensign at lds.org
A reminder that the Service Group will be meeting this Wednesday, November 4 at 7 p.m. at the church. If you have a sewing machine you are able to bring, please bring it.
Mark December 11th on your calendars for our Ward Christmas Party! You will be reminded closer to the date, and are asked to bring non-perishable food items as well as a dozen of your favorite holiday treats!

Note for Moms and Tots
This is a message sent to all members of the Facebook Group Heritage Ward Moms and Tots. Click here if you would like to join or go to this group.
Hey Everyone!
Hey Everyone!
There has been a change to the Heritage Ward Mom and Tots. From now on it will be once a month.
I am hoping to do something a bit more fun like going to the astro jumps, swimming, or something along those lines. Since it is once a month I figure it will be a little easier to do fun things like that- unless the winter roads don't allow for driving too far.
As always I will send out an email each time that there will be the playgroup. I haven't figured out what thursday of each month playgroup will be yet...but it won't be this week since I work nights:)- so please do not show up at the church this week.
I will have an announcement ready for Sunday's relief society and an email later in the week letting you guys know Thursday and where to meet.
Thanks so much girls!
Jenn

Service Group Meeting
The Service Group will be meeting Wednesday, November 4th at 7pm at the church. We will be finishing up the project started last month - sewing blankets for Blankets for Canada. If you have a sewing machine you can bring, please bring it. The plan is to use up ALL the fabric in the two boxes we have been given, and get more blankets sewn!
The nursery is also in need of our service, sisters. The toys there are in need of sanitizing. Please contact Kim Earl if you are willing and able to get together one evening in November to clean the toys in the nursery. Thank you!

Super Saturday Finale
A big thank you to all who were able to help out and participate in our Super Saturday activities. A lot of preparation and planning goes into events such as these, and it was great to see all of you there having fun, completing projects, visiting, enjoying each others company, and serving each other.
Muffins, fruits, juices and treats were served as sisters arrived. Five delicious varieties of soup were prepared for lunch, with root beer floats for dessert! Sisters were kept extremely busy sewing capes and spy bags, rolling chocolates, tying tulle tutus, gluing bows and ribbon, painting wood, slicing pictures, sticking vinyl, and tying the quilt.
We have such a fabulous group of sisters. It was fantastic to see everyone mingling and having such fun together.
"Relief Society indeed provides women with special opportunities to express their feelings of charity, benevolence, and love. Wherever women are true to their feminine natures and magnify their opportunities for loving service, they are learning to become more like God." -Spencer W. Kimball

Safety for the Soul
"I want it absolutely clear when I stand before the judgment bar of God that I declared to the world . . . that the Book of Mormon is true.
"For 179 years this book has been examined and attacked, denied and deconstructed, targeted and torn apart like perhaps no other book in modern religious history—perhaps like no other book in any religious history. And still it stands. Failed theories about its origins have been born and parroted and have died—from Ethan Smith to Solomon Spaulding to deranged paranoid to cunning genius. None of these frankly pathetic answers for this book has ever withstood examination because there is no other answer than the one Joseph gave as its young unlearned translator. In this I stand with my own great-grandfather, who said simply enough, “No wicked man could write such a book as this; and no good man would write it, unless it were true and he were commanded of God to do so.”"
Elder Jeffrey R Holland gave a very powerful testimony during the Sunday afternoon session of October 2009 General Conference. We will be studying his talk, "Safety for the Soul" for our lesson this Sunday. Please take time to read and review this talk for Sunday.
The current Relief Society lesson schedule is posted on the right-hand side of our blog page. Links to the articles and talks for the lessons are provided, simply click on the lesson title and the article will be opened in a new window.

Back To Basics
Just a reminder about the Back To Basics group meeting Wednesday 14th at Judy Gilmours house at 7pm. This months focus will be on knitting and crocheting. What does it mean to purl? If you would like answers to these questions, and yearn to learn to crochet or knit... COME!! Do you have patterns/ideas you would like to share, or projects you would like to finish?... COME!! Bring your needles and yarn if you have them. See you there!

A BIG Thank-You to all those who were able to sew panels together before our meeting, and to those who were able attend the Service Group meeting! With five sewing machines humming, and a dozen ladies pinning, ironing, cutting, sewing, tying, and chatting, time went by quickly!
Donated material was cut to 9"square or 18" square and sewn into "panels" approximately 50"x70". Large scraps of fabric were pieced together and sewn as the "innards" of the blankets. These were sewn together with the finished panels, tacked, and finished off with a label "Blankets for Canda -- Not to be Sold" sewn to the corner. All blankets made in Southern Alberta go to those in need in Southern Alberta -- making a difference to our fellow citizens and our local communities.

Five blankets were completed, along with a box full near completion.

This may be an on-going project for the Service Group as it was a huge success.
Members who reach out to serve others in their communities learn that their contributions multiply and that personal growth is inevitable. Latter-day Saints who contribute in their community simply to better it, frequently find unexpected blessings of both greater capacity and increased opportunity to serve.

Freezer Meals Group
This is a great way to stock your freezer for those nights when you don't know what to make for supper or when you don't have the time. We each spend one night cooking a large batch of our favorite recipe, and then we get together and swap. Save yourself from those panic trips to the nearest fast food restaurant and no more rush trips to the grocery.
We have 6 people in our group, so you make 5 of the same recipe. One for each of the other people in the group. 6 if you want to eat it also. We are making 4 batches of 4 servings each, and one batch with 5 servings. This accomodates the different sizes of families in the group. You package it according to what the meal is (zip lock bag or disposable pan) and freeze it.
Meals should be what your family likes. Don't try a new recipe out on the group if you haven't made it before. We would hate to have a meal go to waste. The meal should cost a TOTAL of $40 to $50 for ALL of your supplies to make the meals. That is 8 - 10 dollars per meal. That should include packaging of the meal as well. For example, if your meal is costing only 5 dollars, you would provide things to go with it. Possible ideas are, buns, side dishes, or dessert to bring the cost up. The meal should be able to feed 4 or 5 people. So, if you are making something with chicken breast you need 4 or 5. If it is a soup it should be a large zip lock bag, for a casserole a 9 X 9 tin foil pan.
Also, you need to type out your recipe on a 8 x 11 paper and photo copy it 5 times for everyone in the group. Include on there all the instructions for cooking the meal and any side dishes that go well with the meal (you DO NOT have to provide the side dishes.)
There are lots of cook books available at the public library to give you recipe ideas. There are also various websites offering recipes that freeze well. I have found this to be a super useful group for my family. It is so helpful on busy days to pull something out of the freezer heat it up and eat. We also learn about things that we didn't know we could freeze from the other meals we receive.
We are planning to meet on October 9 for our first meal swap. Thereafter, we will plan to meet on the first or second Friday of the month at 10:30. We only need to meet for 15 minutes to swap the meals. I have 2 freezers, so if you can't make it, please drop your meals off early, and I will swap them for you. You can pick them up whenever it is convienient for you.

Give the gift of Gifts
At Relief Society this past sunday, we were given a slip of paper worthy of posting:
Give the gift of Gifts - A Wonderful Service Opportunity
Each year the Big Brother/Big Sisters organization sponsors a "Christmas Store" to give all children in the Lethbridge community the opportunity to Christmas shop for their families. An event this big requires much help from the community. This year 10th Ward is asking all families in the West Stake to donate appropriate gifts which children will then select and purchase (at very reasonable prices) for their family members (sisters, brothers, parents, grandparents).
Items don't need to be fancy but they must be new or in new condition. This doesn't need to be a costly thing for your family. Two years ago 10th Ward sisters went through items we already had and have things we simply hadn't used. We had so many great gifts to give to this "Store" and we de-cluttered in the mean time!
Some ideas may be: art/wood projects, jewelry, toys, gloves, wallets, games, hair products, clothing, tools, ties, art supplies, CD's, and DVD's gift wrapping supplies. Think like a child and you'll come up with some great ideas!
Thank you for all your help! We know you'll feel the gift of giving as you provide someone else with the exact same opportunity . . . to give!
All gifts can be dropped off or picked up before October 22nd to Sister Marcy Mueller. Her address and phone number are in the West Lethbridge Stake Directory.
